What are the features of a good twin tank air compressor? It should have been designed for exceptional unit life, and will out deliver all of the other models in its class. This review will tell you what you should look for when comparing air compressors, as well as details on some specific makes. I’m thinking of the Makita MAC2400, which has 4.2 CFM at 90 PSI and a host of other features to extend unit life. The review and comparisons with Makita single “hot dog” MAC700, and then other 2.5 HP air compressors are below.

If you look at other twin hot dog models, like the Hitachi 2-HP twin EC12 compressor, you see that this Makita model is similarly priced. The Hitachi is also an oil lubricated model and has similar specs, although it is heavier and has less air capacity. Air compressors running at around $299 seem to be in the mid-range models. This Makita model has a 4.2 gallon tank and runs at 72 dB.

Makita MAC2400 runs at $299.99 on Amazon, which is smack in the mid-range for what you’d pay a 2.5 HP oiled hot dog air compressor. It has the “Big Bore” augmented engine design, which uses a special cast iron engine with larger bore and engine spoke. This allows the unit to run quieter than others (79dB) and keeps the RPM at 1.720 for longer engine life.  All that said, while MAC2400 has a hot dog twin tank, the Makita MAC700 is cheaper but has only 1 single tank with 2.6 gallon tank capacity. They both have the big bore engine design from Makita.

Features of the Makita MAC2400 review:

  • Max pressure is 130 psi.
  • 4.2 CFM at 90 PSI and 4.8 CFM at 40 PSI
  • Dimensions are 19-3/8″x18-3/4″x18″
  • Noise of engine is 79dB
  • Weight is 77 lbs.
  • Comes with: oil and 1/4″ universal quick coupler

Cons:

  • Costs more than other 2.0 HP engines.
  • This compressor requires manhandling or a decent sized dolly to cart around.

Pros:

  • The engine is designed for longer life, quieter operating, and lower RPMs per minute to keep it long lasting. For a 2.0 HP engine it is powerful.
  • 4.2 CFM at 90 PSI
  • Runs on a household circuit, at 12.3 amps

Summary:

Many people looking for a twin tank oil lubricated air compressor want uninterrupted air refresh rates, and a good investment for their money. You have found it in the Makita MAC2400, and many reviewers including myself give it a best in class label.
